A release from the Houghton County Corrections Facility is a physical departure recorded by the Sheriff. The reason may come from a bond, a court order, the end of a county sentence, or a transfer instruction. That first record does not always say the person entered the community. Houghton also houses some people for Keweenaw County and the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community Tribal Court, so the agency that placed the person may hold part of the authority record.
Each system describes a different event. A jail entry can give the door time. A court order supplies legal authority. Michigan OTIS records state prison custody, parole, probation, and later discharge. Parole means release from prison with Michigan Department of Corrections supervision. The distinction prevents two common mistakes. A person moved from Houghton County to state prison has left the jail but has not been freed. A parolee has left prison, yet remains under MDOC authority until discharge. Ask which event occurred before choosing a search.

That is a response timetable, not a promise that all copies arrive then. Allowed fees may cover qualifying labor, media, mailing, and paper at no more than ten cents per letter or legal sheet. The Sheriff does not publish a separate local fee schedule.

Houghton County Release Record Law
Michigan’s Freedom of Information Act, MCL 15.231 through 15.246, governs requests to the Sheriff and County for existing public records. MCL 15.233 supplies the request right, MCL 15.234 addresses fees, MCL 15.235 sets response steps, and MCL 15.243 contains exemptions. The County may redact exempt parts and release the rest. FOIA does not require staff to answer questions or assemble a new 24-hour list.
Michigan General Schedule 11 identifies booking cards, mug shots, release forms, property forms, transfer papers, bonds, and related items that may be found in an inmate jacket. The schedule retains that jacket until release plus ten years. Retention is not the same as online display or guaranteed disclosure. Juvenile, medical, privacy, security, and other protected information remains subject to the correct rules.
A Michigan conviction set aside under MCL 780.621 and later provisions becomes nonpublic. Public court and OTIS visibility can change as a result. Expungement or set-aside means legal public access has changed; it does not create proof of a past release date. No online result may also reflect a spelling issue, a jail-only case, a display limit, or the wrong court.
Note: Michigan’s retention schedule controls held records, not what Houghton County must display on a public website.
Getting Home After Houghton Release
The jail and Houghton County Courthouse are next to each other. The Houghton City Transit service offers weekday on-demand pickup, and its school-year City Commuter Shuttle lists a courthouse stop. A released person must arrange the ride independently. No official source says jail staff schedule transit, that the bus stops at a release door, or that weekend service is available.
Published transit hours are Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with pickup arranged at 906-482-6092. The fare listed at the research date was $5 in the city and $6 outside it. Call the transit service for current routing and cost. For the physical exit time or property process, call Corrections because the Sheriff publishes no release-door instructions.
Bond and Houghton County Release
The Sheriff’s Corrections page directs online bond payments through Allpaid or GovPayNet with PLC number 1364. A payment record is one piece of the chain. It does not prove that staff completed release processing or that another case, detainer, transfer instruction, or court paper is absent.
After payment, call Houghton Corrections for current physical status. Then seek the Sheriff release entry when a lasting date and event type matter. MiCOURT may show the bond or release order, but the court docket can post on a different timetable than the jail exit. Do not substitute a payment confirmation for the release record.
Find Houghton County Released Inmates
Start with the last known custodian. Houghton County has no official browser roster or recent-release feed, so a named-person search begins with the Corrections line and proceeds through the record system that matches the event. Searching all databases without knowing jurisdiction can turn a valid absence into a false claim.
- Collect the full name, approximate dates, date of birth, and any known booking, case, MDOC, BOP, or A-number.

Search Michigan Released Offenders
The Michigan Department of Corrections OTIS portal covers current prisoners, parolees, probationers, and people within three years after discharge from MDOC supervision. It excludes county-jail-only custody, people not sentenced to MDOC, and older discharged records beyond its stated public window. Therefore, an OTIS miss cannot settle a Houghton County jail-release question.

Read Current Status with Assigned Location, Earliest Release Date, Maximum Discharge Date, Date Paroled, and Discharge Date. Date Paroled is the prison-release field for a parolee. Discharge Date often comes later, when MDOC authority ends.

This statewide tool does not replace the Sheriff record for a person who served only a Houghton County jail term.
Houghton County Release Feed Gap
As of the research date, the Houghton County Sheriff website published no browser inmate roster, booking search, recent-release view, release-date field, update schedule, archive window, or online photo feed. Current bookings on an unofficial mirror must not be renamed as releases. The official Corrections page provides facility and contact information but no person lookup.
The fallback is concrete: call 906-482-1742, ask whether the person remains physically housed, and ask whether any departure was release or transfer. Check MI-VINE if a matching agency record is available. Read the court order in MiCOURT. File a Sheriff request for the underlying release form when a durable record is needed. A missing web list says nothing about whether the paper record still exists.
Houghton’s official OCV mobile app is another channel to inspect, but its store listing does not promise a release tab. Local procurement reporting described planned inmate, alleged-charge, bond, and jail-information functions. Only a live, clearly labeled app field should be reported. A current-inmate entry is not a release record.
Note: A missing app entry can reflect a transfer, correction, or delay as well as a community release.
Houghton Release Court Chain
Houghton felony cases have a two-court path. The 97th District Court handles arraignment and preliminary examination. After bind-over, the 12th Circuit Court holds the final felony adjudication and sentence. A District docket that ends with transfer to Circuit Court is not a missing outcome.
Use MiCOURT Case Search by court and party name or case number, then contact the clerk for the official record. A register of actions may show charges, disposition, sentence, jail credit, probation, and later orders. It may not show the exact threshold time at the jail. Join it to the Sheriff release entry.

Correct Houghton Release Records
Michigan routes OTIS correction questions by the source of the disputed field. A conviction, sentence, or court-file error goes first to the sentencing court. A supervision office, location, or absconder-status issue goes to the assigned parole or probation office. MDOC updates its data when the proper court order or supervising-agent direction arrives.
This source-based route is more useful than asking a web administrator to interpret the case. Save the OTIS field, profile identifier, and the court or office record that supports a change. Houghton County Release Supervision
OTIS is also Michigan’s public parole and probation lookup. `PAROLE` generally means prison release to community supervision. `PROB` means probation under court authority, often with MDOC field supervision. `DISCHRG` means MDOC jurisdiction ended. `ABSCOND1` and `ABSCOND2` refer to parole and probation absconder statuses, not successful completion.
The Houghton/Baraga/Keweenaw Counties Parole/Probation office is at 401 East Houghton Avenue on the courthouse fifth floor and can verify an assigned-location value. Its main number is 906-482-6615. The shared office name does not prove the conviction arose in Houghton County, so confirm the sentencing county and court file in OTIS.
A stated supervision period should be checked against OTIS, the assigned office, and the discharge order rather than inferred from a typical term. Status terms alone do not supply the jail release time.

Houghton Release Support Resources
The Sheriff says the jail offers Copper Country Mental Health counseling, clergy sessions, and self-management counseling intended to help people when released. That description concerns in-jail services and does not promise post-release enrollment. The next step is to ask the relevant provider or supervision agent what help is actually available.
MDOC identifies Marquette Branch Prison as the offender-success and reentry facility serving all Upper Peninsula counties, though it is not a Houghton County facility. A parolee can ask the local agent about county options and eligibility. These services can support continuity after release, but they do not verify the date or legal type of release.
Houghton Release Alerts and Federal Status
MI-VINE through VINELink can provide custody-change alerts from a participating agency, including release or transfer events supplied to the service. The Houghton Sheriff links VINELink as a resource, but current event-by-event county participation was not independently proven. Treat an alert as prompt notice, then verify it with the Sheriff and court.
For a federal sentence, the BOP Inmate Locator gives a Release Date and Location. A past date with `RELEASED` means the person is no longer in BOP custody as of that date, not that no state custody or supervision exists. ICE ODLS covers current ICE custody and, under ICE guidance, people released from ICE custody within the prior 60 days. An ICE result concerns ICE custody only.

USMS pretrial custody has no public released-person locator like BOP. The federal court detention or release order and a focused USMS records request are the better route.

Why did the person vanish from the jail list? Houghton publishes no official browser list, and any app disappearance could reflect release, transfer, correction, or lag. Call Corrections and request the release entry.
Houghton County Release Facilities
Houghton County Corrections Facility is the 28-bed county jail behind the Sheriff’s Office. A person may go to the community, Work Camp, another local or tribal custodian, MDOC, or a federal authority. The Sheriff record distinguishes those paths.
Houghton County Work Camp is a 26-bed minimum-security open-bunk program in Calumet. Approved work trips are temporary absences while the participant remains in custody. Final release must be confirmed through the Sheriff and sentencing court.
Houghton County Jail Release History
Houghton County says jail replacement has been discussed since 1983. Proposals were defeated in 2000, 2010, 2018, and 2025. Those debates do not change the current search map: the Sheriff operates the 28-bed Corrections Facility and 26-bed Work Camp.
Former MDOC Camp Kitwen in Painesdale has been vacant since 2009 and is not a current custody location. Do not direct a released-inmate search there. A person sentenced to a Michigan prison leaves Houghton County and should be followed through OTIS once MDOC takes jurisdiction.
